The Zhangye Danxia National Park is located in the Gansu province in China's northwest covering 200 square miles. The site was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009 and is the destination for China Danxia, or Danxia landform, inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in August 2010, is the name of a unique type of landscapes. Danxia landform was discovered and named by famous Chinese geographer Feng Jinglan in 1929. The word "Danxia", referring "丹(vermilion)霞(sunglow)" in Chinese, is originated from a poem of Caopi (187-226), Emperor Wen of the Cao Wei Dynasty (220-265), who was also a famous poet in Chinese history. The Danxia landform is unique to China that can be observed prominently in the sub-tropical region of south-east China, within a crescent-shaped arc that approximately extends to 1700 kilometres.

The development of Danxia Landform research in China experienced three historic stages, i.e. initial estab-lishment, taking shape and expanding since the concept “Danxia Landform” raised by Prof. Chen Guoda in 1939.

Over the past 70 years, geologists and geographers have identified over 700 Danxia landforms in China, mostly in southeast and southwest China. Today, the study of Danxia landforms has developed into a sub-discipline of geomorphology and Danxia Mountain has become China’s research base for Danxia landforms.

Danxia landform is the general name given in China to a unique type of landscape. The inscribed site comprises six areas found in the sub-tropical zone of Southwest China, including Chishui (Guizhou province), Taining (Fujian province), Langshan Mountain (Hunan province), Danxai Mountain (Guangdong province), Longhu Mountain (Jiangxi province), and Jianglangshan Mountain (Zhejiang province), from Guizhou province in the west to Zhejiang province in the east.
